San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was released from the hospital on Sunday afternoon following a shooting incident during an attempted robbery the previous day. Pearsall, the team’s 31st overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, sustained a bullet wound to his chest but is now recovering.
The Incident
Pearsall was shot on Saturday during an attempted robbery in San Francisco’s Union Square. The assailant, a 17-year-old male, tried to steal Pearsall’s Rolex watch, leading to a physical altercation. During the struggle, the gun discharged, striking Pearsall. Both Pearsall and the suspect were injured and hospitalized after the incident. Fortunately, the bullet that hit Pearsall exited his back without causing damage to any vital organs, according to his mother, Erin Pearsall.
Recovery and Team Support
Pearsall’s condition was initially listed as “serious but stable,” but his release from the hospital indicates positive progress. The 49ers shared a statement expressing their gratitude: “He and his family, along with the entire San Francisco 49ers organization, would like to thank the San Francisco Police Department, emergency medical services, doctors, and staff at San Francisco General Hospital.”
His mother also posted an emotional message on Facebook, saying, “He is in good spirits right now. Life is so precious, my friends. Please love each other. My son was spared today.”
Police Action
Authorities have arrested the 17-year-old suspect in connection with the shooting. While the suspect attempted to steal Pearsall’s Rolex, the police stated that there is no indication Pearsall was targeted because of his status as an NFL player.
Pearsall’s Promising Future
The 49ers drafted Ricky Pearsall after a standout college career at the University of Florida, where he accumulated 1,027 scrimmage yards and scored six touchdowns in his final season. The young receiver was expected to contribute significantly to the 49ers’ offense this season, and fans are hopeful for his swift recovery.
Looking Ahead: While Pearsall’s return to the field remains uncertain, his health and recovery are the top priority. The 49ers are set to kick off their 2024 season on September 9, facing the New York Jets on Monday Night Football. Whether Pearsall will be ready to play by then is unclear, but his recovery journey will undoubtedly be watched closely by the team and fans alike.
